This is the only place in the world where tall rainforests are found growing on sand dunes at elevations of over 200 metres. The highest dunes are 240 metres. Famous 75-Mile Beach is flanked by strikingly coloured sand cliffs and desert-like sand blows. Fresh water creeks flow across it to the ocean. You may spot some of Australia’s purest bred dingoes or some of the 354 recorded bird species, which range from rainbow coloured parrots to birds of prey. The island has a diverse cultural history. The indigenous people call it K’gari meaning paradise. European history is rich with tales of shipwrecks, logging and sand mining. Fraser Island’s world heritage listing ranks it with Uluru, Kakadu and the Great Barrier Reef. As a precious part of Australia’s natural and cultural heritage, it is protected for all to appreciate and enjoy. |
